At the Asia Outstanding Companies Poll 2021 organised by Asia Money, FPT was the only technology firm in Vietnam to be honored.

Became the first technology corporation in Southeast Asia to be a strategic partner of Mila, the world’s leading Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI). In addition, outshining hundreds of renowned international IT companies to participate in comprehensive DX consulting and implementation contracts, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, with leading international corporations in the US, Japan, and Malaysia. In Vietnam, FPT was the strategic DX partner of numerous prominent companies in various fields including energy, finance and banking, manufacturing, real estate and aquaculture….

In 2019, FPT signed two DX consultancy contracts with Minh Phu Group - Vietnam's No.1 corporation of shrimp products, focus on building a digital transformation roadmap to optimize the latter’s operating process, minimize costs and improve production capacity to enable it become one of the the world’s leading seafood technology companies and DPGroup - The second largest international parcel delivery network in Europe, help the client build the data architecture needed to become a data-driven business.

The first time, FPT signed a five-year licensing agreement with a Japanese company for up to USD 6.5 million, enabling the use of its RPA platform akaBot.

In 2018, FPT acquired 90% of Intellinet - the leading technology consulting company in the US, helping FPT gain more credit in the market, as a trusted partner to provide end-to-end technology services with higher and more comprehensive value of customers, especially in DX projects.

FPT.AI provides a platform where programmers and businesses can develop solutions that help solve many business problems. Applications of FPT.AI such as virtual assistant, chatbot, customer care center, image recognition… are the key to business automation, optimization operation – customer care and enhance business efficiency.

FPT is the first ASEAN-headquartered firm to become GE’s regional partner in GE Predix - the leading IIoT platform in the world delivered in a Platform as a Services (PaaS) format, mainly aiming at customers involved in industries, manufacturing, health care and public service. Accordingly, FPT will cooperate with GE Digital (a member of GE, specializing in Digital) to put IIoT and GE Predix technology platforms in strategic markets.

In 2015, FPT did get a license to provide telecom services in Myanmar. With this license, FPT is allowed to build a national axis infrastructure, provide a full range of local and international telecommunication services and other network-based value-added services.

In June 2014, FPT completed its first M&A deal with an agreement on acquiring RWE IT Slovakia, under RWE, one of the Europe’s leading utility companies. This is the first cross-border M&A deal of FPT in particular and of the Vietnamese ICT industry in general. This acquisition gave FPT not only a contract worth tens of millions of dollars but also a new business model named 'bestshore'. With bestshore, FPT can simultaneously use both domestic (offshore) and foreign (nearshore) resources to most efficiently provide services to customers. This deal also affirms the readiness of FPT to take part in global technology projects.

In February 2012, FPT decided to expand its retail chain to 150 FPT stores by 2014. The retail stores would specialize in selling technology products and providing technical services. This would become an infrastructure that would enable FPT to approach potential customers according to the corporation’s going-mass strategy. FPT Shop retail chain is present in 63/63 cities and provinces in Vietnam with the number of stores has been steadily increasing over the years.

Sendo.vn, launched in March 2012 and applying the B2B2C (business-to-business-to-consumer) model, became FPT's first e-commerce marketplace. Combined with logistic providers and banks, it brought customers a guaranteed all-in-one transaction experience. In 2014, FPT completed the acquisition of 123mua.vn, one of the top e-commerce sites in Vietnam. This acquisition was an important part of FPT’s Sendo.vn development strategy. FPT aims to make Sendo.vn the e-commerce site with the most transactions by providing outstanding services under the guaranteed purchase model.

Open university to meet HR need

In 1999, the pursuit of software exports forced FPT to recognize that it faced a human resources problem. To solve this dilemma, FPT decided to cooperate with Aptech – a leading IT training and education company - to establish two International Programmer Training Centers, one in Hanoi and one in HCMC, both under the name FPT Aptech. While there were tens of thousands of programmers in the current labor market, most were not adequately skilled in the field of IT, the number of graduates was inadequate and their foreign language skills were poor. In 2003, FPT decided that it would establish a university in order to solve its own HR problem as well as that of Vietnam's IT industry. In September 2006, the FPT University was founded, becoming the first licensed cooperate university. 98% of FU students obtain employment within six months of graduation. Their good professional knowledge, foreign language skills, physical and mental health, and especially the rich experience gained in internship programs, have helped FU students find good jobs even before graduation.

Currently, about tens of thousands of students are enrolled at the FPT high school, college, university, post university, international affiliate courses and the International Student Development Program.

Being listed on the stock market

On December 13th, 2006, FPT stock was listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange (HOSE) with 60,810,230 shares made available with a par value of VND10,000/share. Being the first IT enterprise to be listed, FPT immediately became a blue chip stock. On that first day, FPT shares traded for VND400,000/share. FPT has been one of the top listed companies in terms of market value.

Currently, FPT still maintains a stable trading volume and market liquidity while the dividend paid remains high. With its international standard administration and transparent operations, FPT continues to be highly appreciated by investors at home and abroad. In 2014, FPT was named one of five listed companies with Best Investor Relations by Vietstock.

Motivated by the desire to be able to immediately update all facts on the web and expecting that someday it would be possible for Vietnamese people to read the news via the Internet, FPT established VnExpress - creating one of the first online newspapers in Vietnam on February 26, 2001.

When VnExpress was launched, there were about 50,000 Internet users in Vietnam and they were paying a high fee for slow speed. It was at that time hard to imagine that tens of millions of people would later be reading newspapers on the Internet daily.

The first content platform for Vietnam’s Internet was created to provide press information, including that of VnExpress. The number of readers has been increasing constantly including tens of millions of regular users from both inside and outside the country (according to Google Analytics).

The software outsourcing target set for FPT Software required compliance with quality processes according to international standards. In 2000, FPT became the first IT company in Southeast Asia to be certified as ISO 9001:1994 compliant. In 2004, FPT was the first Vietnamese company to receive CMM 5 (Capability Maturity Model) certification - the highest level for production process capacity in a software development organization - by the US Software Engineering Institute (SEI).

In 2005, FPT created a comprehensive management system and it was the only company to register. In 2012, FPT started applying the Balanced Scorecard tool in strategic management.

FPT has always been a pioneer in using the most advanced tools of corporate governance, and it has achieved most of the necessary certificates for every one of its businesses.

The financial crisis and fluctuations within Vietnam’s economy in 1997 and 1998 placed many companies that specialized in importing equipment and products, including FPT, at a disadvantage. Although it was becoming the largest IT company in Vietnam in its first 10 years, FPT saw that it would be in difficulty if it did not seek new challenges. One new challenge was globalization. FPT sought to reach out to the world, like other global companies, and provide software outsourcing services. At the 1998 Dien Hong Conference, FPT presented a 10-year strategic plan defining software outsourcing as a key direction.

Nearly 20 years later, FPT has become the No. 1 software exporter in Vietnam in terms of human resources and sales. FPT is also featured in the IAOP’s Top 100 Global Outsourcing Companies with a presence in 21 countries.

In 1996, FPT founded a community network called Wisdom of Vietnam with more than 10,000 members. Although not yet connected abroad, Wisdom of Vietnam has brought an exciting new environment to Vietnamese youth. In 1997, Vietnam connected infrastructure to the global Internet network and FPT was selected as the equipment supplier and the Internet service provider (ISP) at the same time. As the only ISP that is not a member of the Posts and Telecommunications Corporation, FPT has been the catalyst for the rapid development of Vietnam's Internet service industry. Based on the experience gained when operating the Wisdom of Vietnam network, FPT has greatly contributed to turning Vietnam into one of the countries with the best internet access infrastructure in the world.

Currently, FPT is one of the three leading telecommunications and internet service providers in Vietnam with internet infrastructure covering 59/63 provinces.

FPT engaged in computer distribution from the early 90s of the 20th century and quickly became one of the major distributors in the market. However, most of the transactions were small and must be made via a third party due to the US embargo.

'FPT must do big businesses, dealing directly with major manufacturers like IBM, Compaq, HP, etc., has to import large quantities and then redistribute to the domestic IT companies.' With such determination, when the US embargo was lifted in 1994 and many international computer firms entered Vietnamese market, quickly approached and persuaded them to choose FPT as their official agent in Vietnam. IBM, one of the first US companies to open representative offices in Vietnam, announced FPT as its first Vietnamese partner. Shortly after that, other technology companies such as Compaq, HP, etc. also started their partnerships with FPT, initiating the technology product distribution sector of FPT.

Currently, FPT has become a distributor of more than 30 technology giants, ranking number one in Vietnam with a network of 1,500 agents in 63 provinces/cities.

The contract to provide computers for the Russian Academy of Sciences along with a partnership with Olivetti in 1989 was the foundation of the IT department. In October 1990, the company was renamed The Corporation for Financing and Promoting Technology (FPT for short). The first commercial software contract of FPT was signed late 1990. It was the Reservation and Booking system for Vietnam Airlines. The first project to use technology to address real-life problems paved the way for FPT’s application software development for the future economic sectors such as banking and telecommunications.

In 1986, the Doi Moi Policy initiated at the Sixth Party Congress paved the way for new economic models and encouraged self-motivation and creativity in a new generation – a generation of Vietnamese Entrepreneurs. As a result, many companies, including FPT, which plays an important role in today’s Vietnamese economy, were established.
In June 1986, working for the Institute of Mechanics under the Vietnam Academy of Science, Mr. Truong Gia Binh decided to establish a Heat and Substance Exchange team with a desire to 'make a lot of money while continuing to do science.' In the summer of 1988, in order to implement a contract to provide computers to the Russian Academy of Sciences, Mr. Truong Gia Binh obtained a subsidy from a state agency at the ministry or headquarters level that enabled him to specialize in the technology import, export and transfer business. He then started to recruit many talented people with different personalities. It can be said that Mr. Truong Gia Binh gathered together the most talented people of his generation.
On September 13, 1988, the Director of the National Institute of Technology Research signed a decision to establish The Food Processing Technology Company (FPT's original name) and he appointed Truong Gia Binh to serve as director. The new company was without capital, assets or cash and possessed only 13 ambitious young scientists who had confidence in their own hands and minds and dared to face every challenge to build a brilliant career.
