Distance medical examinations get the go-ahead

On October 31, Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Healthcare approved a Telemedicine project proposal developed by FTM, under the FPT Technology Development Center. The ministry also granted FPT a license to provide distance medical examinations and healthcare consultations, with the application of information and telecom technologies.

This is the first time in Vietnam that telemedicine homecare services have been licensed for trial operation, with direct management and support from the ministry. FTM is currently working on completing telecom infrastructure, purchasing medical equipment and employing staff for a launch in early 2007.

The service is a completely new concept in Vietnam’s healthcare sector, contributing significantly to improvements in the country’s healthcare system by providing many people with the opportunity to access medical treatment by new technology.

The service has already been launched successfully in developed countries such as the US, France and Switzerland but remains new to Vietnam, to the extent that it isn’t regulated by any medical laws in the country.
