FPT and Vietnam Chess Federation sign strategic cooperation agreement

According to the agreement, VCF and FPT will jointly hold annual “ The 1^st FPT Star Grand Master Chess Tournament” . VCF is assigned the task of registering the competition with the World Chess Federation (FIDE), making it an official part of the international league. The first championship is expected to be held in September 2008.

FPT plans to award scholarships to talented players (recommended by VCF) with financial difficulties within the age range from 6 to 11 in Vietnam . Outstanding players will be sponsored to participate in international competitions to gain experience, with high-achievers in important competitions being awarded.

In 2008, FPT Corporation continues its scholarship program for 15 chess players, each scholarship worth VND 500,000/month.

Also, in 2008, Vietnam will host the Southeast Asian Youth Chess Championship (in Danang from June 11^th to 20^th of 2008) and the International Youth Chess Championship (in Ba Ria – Vung Tau from October 19^th to 31^st of 2008). FPT will sponsor these two events, details as follows:

- 2008 International Youth Chess Championship: FPT will award 12 laptops to 12 Gold Medalists, beside a special prize worth VND 50 million for any Vietnam Gold Medalists, as well as sponsor shirts for all competing Vietnam chess players.

- 2008 Southeast Asian Youth Chess Championship: FPT will award a special prize to any athletes with 5 Gold Medals or more, as well as sponsor shirts for all competing Vietnam chess players.

Mr. Đặng Tất Thắng, Vice Chairman cum Secretary General of the VCF noted: “the signing of the strategic cooperation for the promotion of chess in Vietnam is a bold testament of FPT’s responsibility to the community, and of Vietnam’s traditional “yearning to achieve” spirit; helping to boost chess performance in international leagues.”

Mr. Hoàng Minh Châu, Deputy General Director of FPT says: “This is the 2^nd year that FPT have sponsored Vietnam ’s chess talents. FPT wishes to make direct and effective contributions to Vietnam ’s regional and international sports achievements. We hope our chess talents will continue to train to become champions, and to bring glory to the Motherland.”

Since 2007, FPT Corporation have proactively support young chess talents nationwide. The organization have given 12 monthly scholarships to 12 young talents aged from 6 to 10 in Hanoi, Hochiminh City, Kien Giang, Dong Thap, Lam Dong, Danang, Haiduong, Haiphong, Bac Giang… These are all very talented players with National recognition in chess (recommended by VCF or a responsible agency) whose families are met with financial difficulties.

FPT Corporation have also sponsored the participation of outstanding talents such as Trần Tuấn Minh, Lê Hữu Thái, Nguyễn Thanh Thủy Tiên in international championships and awarded the new Asian Youth Chess Champion Lê Hữu Thái. It has also sponsored competing shirts for the International Youth Chess Championship and the Southeast Asian Youth Chess Championship, uniting players’ confidence and will to compete for the color of Vietnam …

Chess is one of the few sports that Vietnam have received notable achievements, regionally, continentally as well as internationally. In the Southeast Asia region, Vietnam is the leading delegation in almost all chess championships. With proper care and support, Vietnam can have many potential, future world chess champions.
