FPT award local team ranking in 2009 ICPC’s Top 30

HCMC, November 22 – 23 - The 33rd Association for Computing Machinery/ International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM/ICPC) Asia Regional Contest will be held at the HCM University of Technology (HUTECH). It is the largest computer programming contest in the world. FPT Corporation has pledged to award VND 100 million to the Vietnamese team eligible for the World Finals and ranks in the Top 30 worldwide. The Corporation has also pledged to award VND 50 million to the team that ranks in the Top 40.

To promote innovation, FPT Corporation will also award 4 desktop PCs, VND7 million each, to the 4 leading regional teams, and a US$2000 laptop to the winner of the Super Cup in IT at the 17th Vietnam Student Olympiad (OLP) contest, organized by the Vietnam Association for Information Processing, held in league with the ACM/ICPC Asia Regional.

The ACM/ICPC Asia Regional will be held in HCMC, Vietnam, organized by the Vietnam Association for Information Processing (VAIP), Vietnam Student Association (VSA) and the Ministry of Education and Training.

As of end of November 12, nearly 100 teams have registered for the Asia Regional ACM/ICPC in HCMC, of which 80 are from Vietnam and 11 from other countries (4 from Korea, 2 from Chinese Taipei, 2 from Hong Kong and 3 from China). Seven other regional teams from Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines are expected to get registered by November 15. The contest will select 4 finalist teams to participate in the ICPC World Finals due to be held in Stockholm in April 2009.

The ACM ICPC is an activity of the ACM that provides college students with an opportunity to demonstrate and sharpen their problem-solving and computing skills. The contest will be carried out completely in English, on Windows XP platform and using C/C++ (Dev C) and Java language.

Vietnam ’s highest international rank in the previous ICPCs was 44.

In 2005, for the first time BK-Eagle team, (HCMC University of Technology) was among the finalists for the 2006 ACM/ICPC World Finals in the US.

In 2006, Vietnam successfully organized the ACM/ICPC Asia Regional at Hanoi National University from November 24 – 25, 2006. Team Chicken (University of Technology, Hanoi National University) and 3 other teams (Jiao Tong from Shanghai University, ZSU_Andes from Zhongshan University and Gogogo from Zhejiang University) were selected into the World Finals.

In 2007, the ACM/ICPC Asia Regional was held at Danang University. Team BUGS ( University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University Hochiminh City) and DragonCoders (University of Technology, Hanoi National University) advanced to the World Finals in April 2008 in Alberta, Canada.

About the ACM/ICPC:

Under the sponsorship of the ACM, the ACM/ICPC was held for the first time in the US in 1970 and has since attracted thousands of worldwide talented students  in IT. The competition is to encourage innovation, team spirit and creativeness in designing new softwares. It also enables students to test their capability to work under high pressure of tight time deadline. It is known as the oldest, biggest, and most prestigious programming contest in the world.

Universities and faculties may register online at http://icpc.baylor.edu/icpc/ and may register for several  teams, each consisting of 3 students and 1 instructor. Based on results at the regional competition, the top teams will be selected to participate in the ICPC World Finals, held annually in a different country. Each University can have only one team participating in the World Finals.
