FPT awards local chess champions

At the closing ceremony of the 2008 International Young Chess Championship held in Vung Tau on October 30, FPT Corporation awarded VND 80 million to the Gold medalist Trần Minh Thắng and Silver medalist Nguyễn Ngọc Trường Sơn. FPT Corporation also awarded 12 Elead laptops to gold medalists of 12 others competing ranges. Total awarding value is around VND 200 million.

After 12 rigorous days of competition, Trần Minh Thắng passed 11 competitors by winning 10 sets, and lost only 1, successfully got the Gold medal for U8 while Nguyễn Ngọc Trường Sơn won a Silver medal for U18, bringing Vietnam's team to the 7th level. Vietnam has never won a Gold for U8 previously. Trần Minh Thắng's best achievement in the past was 6 Golds at the 2008 Young Southeast Asian Chess Championship, and that of Nguyễn Ngọc Trường Sơn was a Gold for U10.

Particularly, Trần Minh Thắng have been receiving support from FPT Corporation since 2007 through sponsorship for him at international competitions, providing scholarship and financial reward for his achievements at the 2008 Southeast Asian Young Chess Championship. Right at learning of the results, FPT Corporation decided to award the champions to recognize and encourage the winners.

FPT's awards today is to express gratitude for Vietnamese youth’s effort in giving Vietnam a high status in the international chess arena. We trust that more young chess champions will continue to represent Vietnam in the world stage”.

Since 2007, FPT has actively been looking for gifted young chess players from 6 to 10 years old who have achieved high results in national competitions or higher level whose family’s in difficult circumstances, and sponsored training for them.

Within 2007 and 2008, FPT Corporation has sponsored for Vietnam's chess players with a total amount of more than VND 700 million, including scholarships for 13 players, VND500,000/month for each; financial sponsor for international chess competitions, and financial award for players with high international results.

The 2008 International Young Chess Championship jointly held by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province, the International Chess Federation, Vietnam Chess Federation and CIAT company. It took place from October 19 – 31 at the Ba Ria - Vung Tau Gymnasium.

This is an international event attracting participation of 1,500 players from 8 to 18 years old, referees and experts from more than 80 countries over the world. Big nations in chess such as Russia, France, the US, Hungary, China and India all sent their best players to compete.

Finally, India ranked first in the championship’s list with 4 Golds, 2 Silvers, and 2 Bronzes. In second place, Croatia had 2 Golds. China came third with one Gold, 3 Silvers, and 2 Bronzes.
