FPT licensed as supplier of WiMax services

The Government Office has just issued an official document to relevant authorities proposing they issue licenses for an Internet trial project to three enterprises, including FPT. The project allows FPT to conduct a trial service in e-commerce solutions using 2.3 GHz and 3.3 GHz WiMax wireless Internet on fixed line and mobile frequency bands.

WiMax is an acronym for “Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access” and is the latest trend in wireless interface standards, allowing all fixed line, mobile and portable equipment to freely access the Internet. It is a standards-based wireless technology that provides high-throughput broadband connections over long distances. WiMAX can be used for a number of applications, including “last mile” broadband connections, hotspots and cellular backhaul, and high-speed enterprise connectivity for business.

WiMax’s strength is its ability in channel combination, allowing Internet service providers to more easily supply wireless Internet services. WiMax also has other advantages such as speedy data transfer rates, quality service control established for each accession, and security, and allows both licensed and unlicensed frequency spectrum users to access the Internet. Products that pass the conformity tests for WiMAX are capable of forming wireless connections between them to permit the carrying of internet packet data. It is similar to WiFi in concept, but has certain improvements that are aimed at improving performance and should permit usage over much greater distances.

The two other enterprises licensed to supply WiMax services are the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT) and the VTC Multimedia Communications Corporation.
