FPT Telecom Joins Asia – American Gateway (AAG)

FPT Telecom recently became an official member of the AAG ( Asia – American Gateway), pooling its resources to invest in the international Pacific undersea cable project.

Following its accession to the AAG, FPT Telecom is tasked with the construction of a cable relay station at Vũng Tàu – AAG cable contact point in Vietnam . The Vũng Tàu – Hochiminh City route construction will soon follow, connecting FPT Telecom’s IP infrastructure with the AAG network. The AAG cable route construction is expected to finish during the fourth quarter of 2008. Once in operation, it will upgrade FPT Telecom’s international bandwidth to at least 40 GB, 10 times its current bandwidth.

Mr. Nguyễn Đình Hùng – Deputy General Director of FPT Telecom – says: “FPT Telecom’s investment sum of 10 million USD in AAG is part of its strategy to connect globally. This is a revolution for us since it’s the first time we’ve come into possession of such a large international bandwidth”.

AAG’s connection with international and regional telecommunications giants such as Star Hub, Telstra, CAT not only will enable FPT Telecom to provide its end-users better services but also bring into reality quality whole-package ICT solutions for the enterprise community in Vietnam .

As one of the top ISP (internet service provider) in Vietnam , with maximum authority over the provision of telecommunication services, FPT Telecom, now part of AAG, is proud to have its name listed among international telecommunications service providers.

AAG undersea cable project has pledged capital of up to 560 million USD; stretching nearly 20 thousand kilometers, starting from Malaysia (TM) and finishing off on American soil (AT&T). AAG’s contact points meet at Mersing ( Malaysia ), Changi ( Singapore ), Sri Racha ( Thailand ), Tungku ( Brunei ), Vũng Tàu ( Vietnam ), Currimao (Philippinnes), South Lantau ( Hong Kong ), Guam (US), Hawaii (US)...

The route’s connecting point with Vietnam is part of the S1 section, extending 314 km, coming on land at Vũng Tàu, with total initial bandwidth of 240 Gbps. Vietnam currently has 4 corporations investing in this project, including: VNPT, Viettel, Saigon Postel (SPT) and FPT Telecom.

About AAG:

AAG is the Asia - America Gateway international undersea cable system connecting Southeast Asia and Western US . Among its members are international and regional consortiums such as Star Hub, Telstra, CAT, VNPT, SPT, Telecom Malaysia, AT&T, Viettel, FPT Telecom, Brunei Government, Bhati Telecom, PLDT, Telecom Indonesia… will use the latest Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technologies with initial design capacity of 1.9 terabit/s (1 Terabyte approximately equals 1000 Gbs).

The cable system will be provided and installed by Alcatel-Lucent and NEC within a 19 month period, completion is expected to be before November 30th, 2008 .

About FPT Telecom:

FPT Telecom was established in 1997, a subsidiary of FPT corporation. FPT Telecom is one of the first (of 4) ISP in Vietnam , current market share at about 35%, with more than 300 thousand users.

In December 2006, FPT Telecom was given the green-light by the then Ministry of Telecommunications (now the Ministry of Information and Telecommunications) to “Establish and provide telecommunications services, nationwide fixed communications network” allowing FPT Telecom to provide landline communications based on NGN - New Generation Network technologies.

These value-added services include: website design, domain, hosting, database formation, custom email, virtual emails, server leasing…
