FPT Telecom receives Certificate of Merit for developing the Internet in Vietnam

Over the past ten years FPT Telecom’s growth has continued to rise. Its revenue reached $11.7 billion (VND184.8 billion) in 2004, $20.3 billion (VND323.7 billion) in 2005 (an increase of 75 percent over 2004), and $36.1 billion (VND578.6 billion) in 2006 (79 percent more than in 2005). Taxation contributions to the government were over VND32 billion. Total employee numbers, at the end of 2006, stood at 1,700. Estimates for 2007 put FPT Telecom’s revenue at $56 million and staff numbers at 2,200.

FPT has become one of the most significant suppliers of Internet services in Vietnam , with 200,000 subscribers. In 2007 it strives to be the chief provider of telecommunications multi-services with main contents being mass media integration, interactive television and games online. It is also trying to maintain growth rates of 70-100 per year, be a pioneer in strategic digital services, specifically ADSL, telephones and television bandwidth and games online with network infrastructure covering all key economic zones, build a strong group of cadres ready for speedy development, and commit to advanced quality and service provision to serve and meet the needs of millions of customers.

The General Director of FPT Telecom, Mr. Truong Dinh Anh, said: “The ambition of the 1,700 FPT Telecom staff is to provide more and more telephone numbers and link the Internet bandwidth and digital television, comprising dozens of channels and hundreds of other services, on the same cable. Customers pay a single installation fee to have the cable connected to their house and enjoy every service while paying just one bill per month. Our business guideline is ‘Every service on one link’.”

FPT Telecom – Ten years of growth

In 1996 a comprehensive information network called Vietnam Intelligence was established under the management of FPT Internet. Now called FPT Telecom, it allowed users to gain free-of-charge exploration of the network’s information resources.

One year later, in 1997, when Vietnam officially had an Internet connection, FPT Internet became one of the first two Internet service providers.

FPT has continued to conduct research to distribute unique market solutions to build up customer systems and become the first ISP to set perfect services, viewing this as the most decisive criteria in service provision.

Continuing to be a pioneer in the implementation of diverse promotional programs for enterprises, households, and students, such as presenting gifts (modems), awarding extra hours, and free subscription fees, FPT Internet has constantly been creating breakthroughs in the market, facilitating users’ access to the Internet and laying the foundation for the Internet’s development in Vietnam in subsequent years. It is also the basis for FPT Telecom’s ongoing success and expansion.

Milestones over the last ten years

1997: Vietnam Intelligence, under FPT Internet, was established.

1998: FPT became the second largest Internet provider in Vietnam , with a 31 percent market share.

1999: Internet subscriber numbers of 13,000 was reached.

2001: The first and largest electronic newspaper - VnExpress.net - was born.

2002: FPT officially obtained the position of supplier of internet connection services (IXP)

2003:

· FPT was licensed to provide Internet phone services.

· VnExpress was selected as the most popular electronic Vietnamese newspaper on the Internet and was among the ten most significant IT events, as chosen by IT journalists.

· FPT Telecom was set up on the basis of merging FPT Internet Hanoi and FPT HCMC.

2004:

· FPT was among the first companies to provide ADSL bandwidth services in Vietnam .

· VnExpress featured on a list of the 1,000 most globally accessed websites according to Alexa.com, which ranks global websites and is part of Amazon.com.

2005:

· FPT Telecom was established.

· VnExpress was selected as among the top 500 global websites by Alexa.com and won the IT and media gold cup in a contest held by the Vietnam Association for Information Processing; It was awarded a Certificate of Merit for its contribution to propaganda and the dissemination of Communist Party and Government guidelines and policies over five years (2001-2006).

· FPT was licensed to set up a telecommunications network and provide telecommunications services.

· FPT had 60,000 ADSL subscribers nationwide.

2006:

· FPT experimentally provided wireless mobile and fixed WiMax-standard Internet bandwidth with a frequency band of 2.3 GHz and 3.3 GHz.

· IPTV - Internet Protocol Television of the FPT Center under FPT Telecom - was trialed on a large scale.

· FPT was the first company to provide Internet-retrieving services via optical cable (Fiber to the Home – (FTTH)) in Vietnam .

· FPT received License No. 1136/GP-BBCVT for “Telecommunications Network Establishment and the Provision of Telecommunications Services on a National Scale.”

· VnExpress was rated among the top 20 global websites and received the gold cup at the IT contest held by the Vietnam Association for Information Processing.
