Opening a university in Nigeria is the realization of the cooperation agreement between FPT University and the 21st Century Technology of Nigeria signed on September 11, 2011 at Sheraton Hotel, Hanoi.

Accordingly, FPT University will cooperate comprehensively with 21st Century Technologies- the leading information technology and telecommunication group in Nigeria to open an international university, which will be named either 21th Century - FPT University or FPT Nigeria University. FPT University will provide training curriculum, course books, training standardized procedures, sending its management staff and lecturers and the Nigerian, in return, will provide facilities, license and operation cost for the jointly established university to run.

It is expected that all the construction work and admission information will be ready in early 2012.

This move has significantly realized the “education export” strategy proposed by FPT University on September 8, 2006- the very first day of its establishment, saying it would open training bases in foreign countries after ten years. For the last five years, FPT University has created an initial foundation for this strategy by building internationally standardized curriculum, English written course book and packaged operation model so that it can be implemented in and transferred to any places of similar quality bases.

Director Le Truong Tung expressed his hope that the new university in Nigeria will not take a long time to be home to as many students as the Vietnam-based FPT University.

FPT and the 21st Century Technologies established cooperation relationship last June after the visit of Nigerian Vice Chairman cum CEO- Mr. Wale Ajisebutu. An MOU was also signed by the two sides on July 5, establishing mutual cooperation in the fields FPT is strong in. FPT University has received Nigerian students since early 2010.

In Mid August, FPT spent a visit to Nigeria, seeking for more specific cooperation opportunities with local minitries and businesses and was warmly welcomed by the Nigerian President.

Nigeria’s current education system is underdeveloped. Although this is a populous country with about 155 million people, there have been only 100 universities and colleges. Vietnam, in contrast, has two times less population yet more universities and colleges than that of Nigeria. This is also one of the countries sending the most students to study abroad.
