FPT University established the Technology Research Institute

On May 25th, FPT Technology Research Institute was officially launched at FPT University. Officially receiving the establishment decision on 1 April, 2010 , FPT Technology Research Institute is 100% financed by FPT Corporation and directly managed by FPT University. It is expected that, in 2010, FPT Corporation will invest VND 3.5 billion in the operation of the Institute.

Accordingly, the Institute will focus on four directions: information technology application, clean energy and energy saving; biotechnology and space technology.

"The establishment of this Institute marks a significant step over 20 years of the Group’s development. Lately established but with the combination of enterprises, schools, science and technology, FPT Technology Research Institute will be the interference and convergence of all factors to be come a place to research on application of advanced development of science and technology, serving for the development of domestic industries. FPT Technology Research Institute has desire to quickly bring new technologies to effectively apply for Vietnam in general and  for FPT in particular." said Dr. Tran The Trung, the director of the FPT Technology Research Institute.

Besides, the establishment of FPT Technology Research Institute also create s a good environment to attract and gather a lot of "talents" not only in Vietnam but also in the world to research and develop industries and make contribution to the development of the nation’s economy.

For that purpose, the main function s of the Institute are to research and develop technology and science and training. The Institute will conduct science and technology research activities under agreements not only with FPT Corporation but also with domestic or overseas individuals and organizations. Besides that, the Institute also aims at building training programs and performing transfers of knowledge, information, technology and products.

At the opening ceremony, FPT Technology Research Institute signed cooperation agreements with five research agencies, including the Institute of Information Technology under the Hanoi National University, The Vietnam Foudation, FPT Software, Asia Petro and FBM Biology and Regenerated Medicine Joint Stock Company in the areas of information technology, using and develo ment of opened Education Resources programs, initiating technology ideas, supporting the development of the Association of the Vietnam regenerated energy and fuel, research and apply the stem cell technology in health and beauty care.

Currently, the Institute has been conducting 10 research and development projects, two of which have been implemented, including the Fspace satellite and picture processing projects. With the satellite project, the FPT Technology Research Institute targets to complete a satellite this year. If it is a success, this will be the first private satellite to be launch into space in Vietnam. Further targets of the Institute are to commercialize and develop Fspace to be a company and by 2011, the Institute will have at least one patent.

Satellites research project – To launch satellite into space by 2011

The Fspace group is currently conducting a research on designing, manufacturing, test ing and operat ing the satellite called F-1. Satellite F-1 is equipped with cameras to take pictures of the Earth and some sensors to measure temperature and magnetic field of the Earth to explore the environment in the orbit.

Currently, Satellite F-1 is being urgently completed the first testing model. According to the plan, the final model will be ready to launch within 2010 and it is expected to hire foreign missile to launch into the Earth orbit by 2011.

Satellites manufacturing is not strange to the world, but this field is still new to Vietnam, so the FSpace group has to work by themselves, learning experience of foreign countries and asking for consultation of domestic and foreign specialists. The group's first task is to research on building stations receiving satellite signals. This job is very important, because if they manufactur e satellites successfully but these satellites cannot communicate with the Earth, then the project will be meaningless. Signal receiving operation is very difficult because the satellite flies very far from the Earth; the average distance to ground stations is about 2,000 km while the broadcasting capacity of the satellite is too low.

After a two - month research, the group has successfully collected the signals of NOAA meteorological satellite of the United States, Cute 1 CO-55 of Japan and Lusat Osca LO-19 of Argentina. The group used software to decod e cloud pictures taken by the NOAA meteorological satellite, as well as decode CW beacon signals of other small satellites under Morse codes.

After this success, the Fspace group entered the stage of mechanical design, electricity/electronics and control software development for Satellite Satellite F-1. Next, the group will continue producing three models of Satellite F-1: function testing model (Model BreadBoard - BBM), Engineering Model (EM) and finally flight model – ( FM).

FSpace has successfully obtained the license to use electricity radio frequency for ground stations from the Radio Frequency Directorate (under the Ministry of Information and Communications ) and ha s applied for license to use frequenc y for the satellite flying in the orbit to the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU).

The project on picture processing technology

With picture processing group, the Institute has conducted testing researches includ ding identification of VIP customers when they go into the reception area in order to help the unit be active in communicating and welcoming customers; system of identifying vehicle plate number and ticketing automatically; and improve picture processing technology of health which automatic ally discover bone tissue, blood tissue, muscle tissue on X – rays photos.

In the picture processing group, three students of FPT University were lucky to participat e in the Genaration Interactive Image (IIG) project working for the partner, the NTT Research Institute of Japan.

The main activities of IIG project are to analyze and process necessary information in the demoed video, then this information will be applied for sports teaching. After finishing, the project was highly appreciated by customer and NTT decided to select one of three FPT students who participated in the project to go to Japan for a one- week practice.

The purpose of this trip is to help students learn more about NTT Hospital, and also observe and monitor how the IIG project is applied and implemented . Expected ly, in the coming time, IIG project group will continue to study more about some new functions as requested by customers. Six students from the FPT University have been selected to continue to participate in this project.

In the coming time, the FPT Technology Research Institute will continue to conduct projects on energy saving, eyes project for the blind which helps them feel the space of surrounding images; super capacitor project for energy storing technology in the space.
