FPT University opens

On 13 January 2007, FPT University opened at the Detech Building on Pham Hung Street, Hanoi, and on the same day signed the partnership agreement with IBM. IBM will support FPT University in terms of staff training and partially finance students when they sit exams to obtain the IBM Certificate. In return, the University uses IBM’s education syllabus, teaching materials and technology. FPT University also recognizes IBM Specialization Certificates as credits for certain subjects in its curriculum.

Attending the opening ceremony were a representative from the Ministry of Posts and Telematics, FPT teaching staff and 300 students in the first school year and, in particular, representatives from major IT corporations such as IBM, Microsoft, Hitachi Software, Unisys, NRI, TIS, and Oracle.

Mr. Truong Gia Binh, Chairman of FPT Corporation’s Management Board, said “We hope that FPT University will be an environment for creativity and innovation in the new age. Via the partnership program, FPT University and the FPT Corporation are committed to assisting students in becoming mature in personality and capability to face every challenge, adapting themselves to various changes to reach their goals and foster the intellectual economy.”

Mr. Lee Puay Eng, IBM Vietnam’s General Director, said: “Vietnam is one of IBM’s strategic markets and IBM desires to speed up the partnership with FPT, in which IBM-oriented IT human resources are employed. During 13 years of co-operation and development, FPT has always been IBM’s most significant partner in Vietnam. FPT also remains IBM’s major supplier of independent software development services for Japan, the US, France, Belgium and Singapore.”

At the ceremony, FPT Corporation presented 50 full scholarships to excellent students worth at total of $500,000, and BIDV Bank provided financial support to poor students with good performance in the form of 80 credit loans worth a total of $600,000.

The number of students receiving scholarships and credit loan assistance represent 43 percent of all students entering FPT University.

On the same day FPT commenced its first education year, with 10 classes specializing in software techniques. Students will spend their first six weeks exploring study methodologies, career orientations, and several soft skills ranging from reading and researching documents and reporting, to developing their personality. Following this will be time to study specialized subjects, of which two-thirds of the first year is reserved for English and the remainder for mathematics, social humanities, personal development, software technology, and Japanese. Other specialized subjects are taught in the second year. An internship at software companies begins in the third year.

FPT University’s initial infrastructure caters for the training of 900 students. In September 2008 it will open a new headquarters at the Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Zone and its capacity will be 5,000 students.

What differentiates FPT University from others is FPT Corporation’s support in finance and the experience and input of experts and teaching staff. Students are also job-trained in globalization-oriented methodologies.

FPT has committed to sign employment contracts with all students from the first intake after graduation at a salary of $200-400 per month, depending on their results.
