A key component of the partnership is an agreement to develop a Cloud Computing platform based on Microsoft technology. The two parties aim to ultimately develop a platform for cloud-based services including communications, collaboration, data storage, and infrastructure services to meet the differing needs of customers. This agreement demonstrates the leadership and commitment of both parties to bring world class technology to the country.
“Today’s announcement is the first step in bringing Cloud Computing to Vietnam which is an important phase in the country’s continued development of its IT industry,” said Microsoft Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer, Steve Ballmer. “By working with FPT, we hope to make the cloud more accessible to organizations in Vietnam and offer them a hybrid approach – a mix of cloud and on-premise services.” [A1]
Mr Ballmer also said that today 70% of the 40,000 people who create software at Microsoft are working on cloud products and services, and that by 2011 he expect that number to be closer to 90%.
Under the agreement Microsoft Vietnam and FPT will explore and collaborate on cloud computing opportunities in Vietnam with the intent of trialing commercial offerings.
“This is an exciting project for both parties and a key milestone in our partnership. We see the great mix of expertise, capabilities and strengths and are confident that our joint solutions and services weaving modern technologies in will result in better productivity and performance for our customers,” said Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nam, CEO of FPT.
Cloud computing has many advantages for Vietnam organizations and government bodies. Where shortage of IT skills and upfront cost may slow IT adoption, the benefits are obvious: no need for heavy internal infrastructure and resources, subscription mechanism and easy scalability when necessary.
Microsoft believes this will help Vietnam to achieve its ICT 2020 objectives of 22% of the GDP coming from the ICT industry.
