Triple Play Technology: The strategic weapon of FPT Telecom

Deputy General Director of FPT Telecom – Mr. Truong Hoai Trang - has considered Triple Play technology as the key issue in the company’s strategy of developing “all services over a single connection”, with the hope of creating a difference compared to other telecommunication service providers.

In March 2009, FPT Telecom introduced to the market three new cost packages: MegaMe+, MegaYou+ and MegaSave+, developed on the basis of Triple Play technology, using IP infrastructure to transmit images, sounds, data in one service package to end-users.

The three new products of FPT Telecom allow customers to enjoy every basic communication utility for work and entertainment with high qualities. The service packages operate on the ADSL broadband with the volume of 6 Mbps and the FTTH optical cables of the company.

This is the main emphasis of Triple Play when it provides users with high quality and convenience as well as online interaction and the ability to change interfaces/ modes of using the services in an optimal way as they wish.

This technology can create many types of services without which the traditional technology cannot provide, such as telephone, films as requested, re-watching television programmes, storing and sharing data, reading newspapers on televisions …

Although customers can use many services, only one monthly bill will be issued for all the above services.

Due to the fact that Triple Play technology only uses one single IP infrastructure to provide services, the investment cost will be greatly reduced, leading to much cheaper cost in comparison with the total cost that customers have to pay for each single service now.

It can be said that the harsh competition among telecommunication service providers has forced them to find a new source of income. Triple Play technology can be considered as an “ace of spades” of FPT Telecom in the race to win a market share and keep the rank.

“It is not simple to make a profit from a single service, but the integration of many services on one single connection can bring about many opportunities,” said Deputy General Director of FPT Telecom.

Mr. Trang compared the business opportunity of FPT Telecom with a motorbike produced by the company which could run like a boat in the flood season.

Mr. Trang did not reveal the expected turnover when Triple Play technology was deployed, but he believed that the number of people using this service might increase up to tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands, subscribers.

In the world, Triple Play technology has been promoted since 2004-2005. In developed countries, the telecommunication sector has integrated these services for a long time. Currently, FPT Telecom is the first provider to apply this technology in Vietnam.

According to the analysis of the Deputy General Director of FPT Telecom, other telecommunication providers can deploy and apply Triple Play technology, because it is not a new one, but the infrastructure and bands have not allowed them to do so.

With the ripe investment, in the suitable conditions and with the ability to take full advantage of all preeminent features of Triple Play, this technology business sector will help FPT Telecom continue to grow.

Nowadays, with the tendency of service integration, telecommunication service providers can play the roles of both conversation service providers and content providers, and make the most of the available telecommunication infrastructure to provide multimedia services. However, according to Mr. Trang, there are not many multi-service providers like FPT Telecom.

“In terms of organization and economy, FPT Telecom is not as powerful as VNPT or Viettel. However, with a small and sharp-witted apparatus, FPT Telecom can surpass more easily than the other two complicated companies. Triple Play technology can be regarded as a step to create impetus for FPT Telecom,” said Mr. Trang.

In the 2009 shareholders’ meeting at the end of March, The new CEO - Nguyen Thanh Nam also considered Triple Play an emphasis of FPT Telecom in particular and of FPT Corporation in general in the development strategy, and the turnover might increase through deploying and applying this technology.
