Vuong Ba Quy wins first prize at Vietnam Intelligence 2006

Vuong Ba Quy, a former student at Singapore’s Nanyang University, has won first prize in the software design contest “Vietnam Intelligence 2006” with the “System for Editing, Recognizing and Calculating Mathematical Expressions”. The awards ceremony was held at the National Conference Center on the evening of 1 January 2007. Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Nguyen Sinh Hung presented Quy with the award.

At the ceremony, Editorial Director of the “Labor” newspaper and Head of the Organization Board, Dr Vuong Van Viet, said: “The contest has the role of encouraging young people interested in IT to create computer software that helps Vietnam to be in tune with international IT matters.”

Vuong Ba Quy was born in 1983 in Hai Phong city. He took only three and a half years (instead of the usual four) to graduate from the Computer Technology faculty at Nanyang University, continually being in the top five percent of his class. He has received a Vietnam Education Foundation scholarship for his postgraduate studies.

First prize at the Vietnam Intelligence 2006 contest is VND70 million and an FPT Elead computer. Quy also received a gift worth VND5 million from the major sponsor – the Thuy Duong Co. Ltd.

The Organization Board also presented two second prizes, two third prizes, and several others in the categories of “Integration”, “Potential”, and “Practical”. The CRC-TOPIC nursery garden presented a prize called “Nursery Garden”, valued at VND75 million, for the “Vietspace Portal”, designed by Tran Hung Cuong from Nam Dinh province and Luong Tuan Vu from Hanoi.

“Vietnam Intelligence” is a contest for computer software held since 2000 by the “Labor” newspaper, Vietnam Television and the FPT Corporation. “Vietnam Intelligence 2006” received 106 entries, of which 12 were selected for the final round that took place on 29 and 30 December 2006 in Hanoi .

The awards ceremony was conducted in the form of an opera consisting of five scenes under the topics of Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth. Mr. Lai Van Sam, a reporter, and Mr. Tran Lap, a singer, were the MCs. The young choreographer Tran Ly Ly staged the dance performances. The program was produced by Vietnamese Television’s Department of Sports, Entertainment and Economic Information.

“Vietnam Intelligence 2006” was primarily funded by Thuy Duong - TD Plaza Hai Phong, and VMS-MobiFone. Co-sponsors were the VP Capital Co., Ltd and the Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (VBARD). Vietnam Airlines financed transportation costs and the Vietnam Data Communications Company provided Internet services. The Vietnam Entertainment Company (VEC) was also a contributor.
