Hanoi, April 29, 2026 – The Government of Japan has announced the conferment of the Order of the Rising Sun on Mr. Truong Gia Binh, Chairman of FPT Corporation, in recognition of his significant contributions to the development of Japan–Vietnam relations. Under his leadership, FPT was among the pioneering companies exporting software to Japan more than 20 years ago, helping pave the way for Vietnam’s software industry to enter and grow in this market, while gradually building a bridge between the business communities of the two countries.

Over more than two decades, under Mr. Truong Gia Binh’s leadership, FPT has established a strong presence in Japan and become one of the largest foreign-invested technology companies in the market. FPT currently has more than 5,000 employees working directly across 18 offices and R&D centers in Japan, along with over 18,000 global experts dedicated to the Japanese market, delivering technology services and solutions to more than 450 clients.
Notably, FPT and Mr. Truong Gia Binh have actively participated in bilateral cooperation mechanisms and business connectivity initiatives between the two countries, including economic forums, business associations, and Vietnam–Japan cooperation initiatives. These efforts have strengthened links between business communities and promoted collaboration in strategic technology fields such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and semiconductors.
These contributions form a key basis for the Japanese Government’s decision to award Mr. Truong Gia Binh the Order of the Rising Sun, recognizing his role in advancing technological cooperation, developing digital talent, and strengthening economic ties between the two nations. In 2013, he was also honored with the Nikkei Asia Prize by Japan’s Nikkei Group for his significant contributions to the development of Vietnam’s IT industry.
Mr. Truong Gia Binh graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1979, earned his PhD in 1982, and was awarded the title of Associate Professor in 1991. On September 13, 1988, he and 12 scientists co-founded FPT Corporation. Throughout its development, he has played a central role in shaping the company’s strategic direction, transforming FPT into a globally recognized technology enterprise.
This announcement comes as Vietnam prepares to welcome Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for an official visit in early May 2026. The visit is expected to further strengthen Vietnam–Japan relations, with a focus on key pillars such as innovation and science and technology, semiconductors, energy security, strategic infrastructure, diplomacy, and security. In these strategic technology domains, both countries identify artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum technologies, and cybersecurity as critical priorities.
In Vietnam, a number of distinguished individuals have previously been awarded the Order of the Rising Sun in recognition of their contributions to strengthening bilateral relations. These include former General Secretary Do Muoi (posthumously), former General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, former Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, former National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, among other senior leaders.
In the defense sector, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, former Deputy Minister of National Defense, has also received the decoration for his contributions to defense cooperation and Vietnam–Japan relations.
In the field of economic development and cooperation, the order has been awarded to individuals contributing to investment attraction and business connectivity, such as former Minister of Planning and Investment Vo Hong Phuc, as well as professionals engaged in economic diplomacy.
In academia and science, notable scholars including Professor Vo Tong Xuan and Professor Duong Phu Hiep have been honored for their contributions to research collaboration, education, and fostering mutual understanding between the two countries.
