Currently, the freight management operations of Vietnam Railways have been moved into a computerized software deployed by FPT IS.

All the information about the trains is centrally managed. Using this database, customers of Vietnam Railways can access and capture information before, during and after the shipment process in real-time, looking up information anytime, anywhere. Salespeople, as well as operators, can check commercial conditions and technical conditions of wagons throughout the network or at the station.

According to Bui Thanh Binh, Director of Passenger Transport Solution Center under FPT IS, the next step is to allow customers to use the IT system to carry out electronic transactions, exchange information between systems; search for positions of freight using the invoice number and create electronic invoices. With this feature, customers can work with Vietnam Railways via the Internet, email without the need to go to the station. This helps both sides save time and reduce costs.

Before the system was put into operation, most of the internal activities of the Vietnam Railways were handiwork. The localized information made it hard to have strong commitments with customers. The complex cost caused an obstruction in offering customer effective choices.

For customers, it was very difficult for them to capture information such as: when were the wagons available? How much? etc. Then, it was difficult to answer where the trains were, when their goods were uploaded, whetner delivery time was guaranteed, if they could change the journey etc.

So, in October 2016, the Vietnam Railways worked with FPT IS to test the freight transport management system via the Internet to improve the quality of services and publish information.

At present, the system has been deployed for 3 railway transport companies, the railway traffic control center and 80 major stations of the Vietnam Railways.

Almost 2,000 user accounts are now available to exchange and share information on a single software platform. Each day, the system receives more than 10,000 records.
