FPT Contributes to Promoting Semiconductor Workforce Training Cooperation Between Vietnam and Japan

20/02/2025

On February 20, 2025, within the framework of the program “Japan-Vietnam Joint Initiative in the New Era, Phase 1,” signed between the two governments, a delegation from Kyushu, Japan consisting of 20 representatives from enterprises, universities, and technical colleges visited and worked with FPT in Hanoi.

The visit aimed to discuss strategies for cooperation in training high-quality human resources for the semiconductor industry, strengthening the personnel supply chain between the two countries, meeting the growing demand for semiconductor technology development worldwide, and opening up promising opportunities for future collaboration.

The Japanese expert delegation expressed their interest in promoting semiconductor workforce training cooperation with FPT.

The exchange program was also attended by Mr. Matsumoto Izumi – First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam, Mr. Tran Dang Hoa – Chairman of FPT Semiconductor, FPT Corporation, along with other representatives and semiconductor industry experts from FPT.

Japan is currently one of the leading countries in the semiconductor industry, with a growing demand for highly skilled professionals. Meanwhile, Vietnam is gradually affirming its position as one of the potential centers for training and supplying human resources for this field.

Mr. Koga Yukihara, Secretary-General of the Kyushu Semiconductor & Digital Innovation Association (SIIQ) and head of the Kyushu delegation, shared: “The rapid growth of Japan’s semiconductor industry has led to a severe shortage of skilled personnel, especially IC design engineers and high-tech specialists. We, Kyushu - once known as Japan’s semiconductor capital, the ‘Silicon Island’  are actively promoting strategies to attract and train high-quality human resources, not only domestically but also through expanded cooperation with international partners. Vietnam, with its young, tech-savvy workforce and an increasingly strong educational foundation, is one of the key destinations we aim to collaborate with to supplement the semiconductor workforce of Kyushu in particular and Japan as a whole.”

The visit of the Kyushu delegation holds great significance in understanding the current state of semiconductor workforce training in Vietnam, particularly in universities and enterprises. At the same time, it provided an opportunity for the Japanese side to share their recruitment needs, thereby creating a bridge between Japanese enterprises and training institutions and human resources in Vietnam.

During the meeting, the Kyushu delegation expressed strong interest in FPT’s semiconductor training programs and the capabilities of Vietnamese engineers. To achieve the goal of training 50,000 semiconductor professionals by 2030 and meet the urgent demand for industry development, FPT has implemented various training programs to supply high-quality human resources for the semiconductor field. Notably, FPT offers a formal university program in Semiconductor IC Design, an international joint college-level Semiconductor Technology training program in partnership with BTEC, and an international certification program in IC Design – FPT Jetking. The training model not only focuses on theory but also emphasizes practical experience through a “learning by doing” approach, allowing students to directly participate in real-life projects with enterprises. Leveraging FPT’s ecosystem, students also gain access to advanced research centers, modern laboratories, and “Make in Vietnam” chip design projects, helping them bec

Mr. Tran Dang Hoa, from FPT Corporation, shared: “We highly appreciate the interest of the Kyushu delegation and believe in the strong potential for cooperation between both sides. Japan is one of FPT’s key markets, and we are always committed to fostering robust partnerships in technology, especially in semiconductors. With our strategic position, abundant human resources, and developed technology ecosystem, Vietnam is entering a booming phase of the semiconductor industry. We believe that the connection between FPT and Kyushu will open up numerous development opportunities, not only in workforce training but also in research, production, and IC applications. We hope that in the near future, both sides can quickly implement specific cooperation programs to contribute to the sustainable development of the Vietnam–Japan semiconductor industry.”

The demand for semiconductor human resources has undergone significant changes in recent years. With the strong advancement of technology, many processes have become automated, leading to higher requirements for the workforce. Instead of large numbers, the semiconductor industry now requires high-level experts and engineers with deep specialization. Even in business fields, sales teams are expected to act as experts capable of providing precise and effective consulting to clients. Therefore, the training of high-quality human resources has not only become a trend but a decisive factor for the sustainable development of the semiconductor industry.

In addition, the Kyushu delegation showed particular interest in building a diverse semiconductor workforce from multiple countries and ensuring gender equality according to international standards. This is an important trend aimed at creating an inclusive working environment and maximizing the potential of engineers in the high-tech industry.

FPT Corporation laid the foundation for the semiconductor industry more than a decade ago. By March 2022, the establishment of its semiconductor subsidiary marked a significant milestone in FPT’s strategy to develop Vietnam’s IC industry. Some of FPT’s notable achievements in this field include launching “Make in Vietnam” chip lines such as Power Management ICs (PMIC) and IoT microchips for medical applications, employing around 200 IC design engineers, and collaborating with over 30 clients in Japan, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

This meeting marks an important step forward in the cooperative relationship between FPT and Kyushu in particular, as well as between Vietnam and Japan in general, in the semiconductor technology field. With a strong commitment to investing in training and human resource development, both sides expect to establish a sustainable cooperation model that will enhance the quality of semiconductor talent and contribute positively to the global development of the industry.
