FPT IS obtained the first patent in the United States for akaBot's document-processing machine learning system

05/12/2023

In November 2023, FPT Information System Company (FPT IS) received official patent approval from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for its machine learning system, which is designed to separate and classify documents autonomously.

FPT IS's invention has been categorized as a Utility Patent, marking one of the rare instances where the review and issuance process was completed seven months ahead of the standard timeframe stipulated by US regulations. This pioneering invention has already found practical applications in two automation products: akaBot and UBot.

"In line with our survey findings, the typical SME enterprise in Vietnam is confronted with the task of handling hundreds to over 1,000 documents on a daily basis. The escalating volume of crucial documents, including contracts, invoices, legal papers, and goods-related documents, demands escalating time and managerial efforts. Furthermore, manual processes of data separation and classification are prone to errors and inconsistencies, jeopardizing the reliability of stored documents," explained Mr. Bui Dinh Giap, the Managing Director of akaBot at FPT IS and one of the experts involved in the invention.

In addressing this challenge, the team of experts leveraged Machine Learning, training computers to deploy and process diverse input documents, including sales invoices, tax invoices, packing slips, delivery documents, contracts, and more. The documents are autonomously classified into one or more sub-documents with separate content. The invention's technology has been effectively integrated into two products, akaBot Vision and UBot Invoice, since 2021, catering to over 1,500 customers. This intelligent solution facilitates the processing of up to 300-400 sets of documents per day in business workflows. Moreover, in synergy with akaBot's RPA core technology, the invention significantly reduces data separation and classification time, diminishing it from 15 minutes to 5-10 seconds per document set. These pioneering advancements contribute to FPT IS's inventions meeting the "useful" criteria set by the world's most stringent patent office.

Commenting on this significant milestone, Mr. Tran Dang Hoa, Chairman of FPT IS, expressed, "Securing a patent from one of the world's most rigorous countries is a pivotal step in our strategy to elevate FPT IS's information technology products and services to an international level. It also serves as evidence that our "Made by FPT IS" solutions, and "Make in Vietnam" solutions as well, fully adhere to high-end global technology standards. The patent in the akaBot product is a crucial catalyst and foundation to materialize FPT IS's global strategy, reinforcing the position of Vietnamese technology products on the global stage."akaBot and UBot represent two automation solutions featuring virtual robot assistants within the technology product ecosystem created by FPT IS. These solutions aim to streamline tedious and repetitive operations within businesses. Notably, the data entry, processing, and management procedures have garnered significant attention from numerous business clients. Following the integration of the latest invention, FPT IS's suite of automation solutions has demonstrated an enhanced capability to reduce processing time by 80% to 92%, leading to operational optimization and a reduction of 35 minutes in manual document processing per day.
