On December 10 in Tokyo, Japan, FPT signed a cooperation agreement with Toshiba Information Systems (TJ) to address the shortage of semiconductor talent in Japan.
Under the agreement, FPT and Toshiba Information Systems will jointly develop talent resources, providing opportunities for Vietnamese engineers while fostering deeper collaboration between the two nations in high technology. FPT plans to send engineers to Japan as part of the partnership, with the goal of increasing its engineering workforce in Japan nearly sixfold within five years.
Representatives of FPT and TJ expand cooperation in many areas in the semiconductor industry.
In addition, Toshiba Information Systems will collaborate with FPT Education to design and implement specialized training programs at FPT’s educational institutions. Graduates from these programs will be prioritized for employment opportunities at TJ.
Both parties will organize annual workshops and knowledge-sharing sessions involving experts from FPT and TJ. These activities aim to enhance professional expertise while driving creativity and innovation in the semiconductor industry.
Beyond workforce development, the partnership will expand into new areas such as IC testing, reliability checks, fault analysis, and IC manufacturing to address the growing demands of the rapidly evolving semiconductor industry. Offshore development also plays a pivotal role in both parties' expansion strategies. The Offshore Development Center (ODC) in Vietnam, managed and operated by Toshiba at FPT's facilities, represents a significant opportunity to elevate Vietnam's semiconductor industry on the global stage.
At the signing ceremony, Mr. Tran Dang Hoa, Chairman of FPT IS and FPT Semiconductor, emphasized that the cooperation agreement not only highlighted a decade of successful collaboration between FPT and TJ but also opened up significant opportunities for Vietnam to solidify its position in the global semiconductor value chain. "The partnership addresses Japan’s semiconductor talent shortage while laying a robust foundation for Vietnam’s semiconductor industry to thrive in the coming years," he said.
Mr. Tran Dang Hoa, FPT Corporation, spoke at the event.
A representative from TJ commended FPT's engineers for their critical contributions to Toshiba's strategic projects over the past decade. The partnership aims to build a high-quality semiconductor engineering workforce while expanding into IC testing, fault analysis, reliability verification, IC manufacturing, and specialized training programs. These efforts are expected to elevate both parties' positions within the global semiconductor industry.
The collaboration between FPT and Toshiba Information Systems began in 2014, focusing on building a high-quality semiconductor engineering team trained for strategic projects in Japan. This partnership has facilitated technology and knowledge transfer between Japanese and Vietnamese experts, creating a solid foundation for Vietnam’s semiconductor industry and establishing the country as a trusted provider of semiconductor talent in the region.
The semiconductor industry is considered the “lifeblood” of the digital economy, playing a pivotal role in sectors such as automotive manufacturing, medical devices, consumer electronics, and AI technology. However, rapid growth in the industry has led to a talent shortage in Japan. Against this backdrop, Vietnam’s focus on developing high-quality talent has positioned it as a reliable supplier of semiconductor engineers to global technology corporations, with FPT leading the way through its strategic partnership with Toshiba Information Systems.
