FPT Play will exclusively broadcast all three events of the 2024 MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards), one of Asia's most prestigious music award ceremonies. The live broadcast is scheduled at 10:00 and 14:00 on November 22 and 11:00 on November 23 (Vietnam time).
MAMA 2024 (Mnet Asian Music Awards) marks the beginning of the Korean awards festival season at the end of the year. With the theme "Big Blur = WHAT IS REAL?" this year's ceremony spans three major events. For the first time, MAMA will cross Asia's borders, with its inaugural stage set to take place at the prestigious Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, USA—dubbed the "cathedral" of global entertainment—on November 22 at 10:00 AM (Vietnam time). The subsequent two stages will return to Asia at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan, scheduled for November 22 at 2:00 PM and November 23 at 11:00 AM (Vietnam time).
A MAMA 2024 Organizing Committee representative said: "We have created a 360-degree dome stage, offering a unique experience exclusive to MAMA." The audience can look forward to admiring mesmerizing visuals and surreal performances that seamlessly blend art and technology. In Los Angeles, the awards ceremony will be hosted by renowned actor Park Bo Gum, while Korea's highly acclaimed rising star, Kim Tae Ri, will take on the role of MC for the event in Japan.
For the first time, MAMA is hosted in the United States, showcasing significant investments in technology and artistry. This marks a bold step in transforming the event into a "Korean Grammy," further elevating its global stature. Broadcasts will reach audiences worldwide, bringing the vibrant K-pop scene to fans everywhere. In Vietnam, viewers can enjoy the event live on FPT Play.
This year's awards feature 21 categories, including the three prestigious Daesangs: Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year.
Additionally, MAMA has introduced a new category, "Best Choreography," celebrating the choreographers and artists behind K-pop's visually stunning and globally recognized performances.
To qualify for nomination, music products must have been released between October 1, 2023, and September 30, 2024. The MAMA 2024 Organizing Committee recently introduced updated judging criteria. For the "Song of the Year" category, scores will now be determined by 60% from online downloads and 40% from the Jury's evaluation (a shift from the previous 80%-20% ratio). Similarly, the "Album of the Year" category will be scored based on 60% album sales and 40% of the Jury's evaluation, replacing the earlier 80-20 ratio. Notably, the "Best MV" and "Best Choreography" categories will be evaluated 100% by the Jury.
The increased weight given to the Jury's evaluation this year adds an extra layer of unpredictability to the award results. Beyond just sales figures, music products must now excel in multiple areas, including album packaging, production quality, artistic value, visual appeal, and their overall impact on the music industry, to secure the Jury's approval. This adjustment could create new opportunities for girl groups, who often face an uphill battle against boy groups' dominance in metrics like streaming, downloads, and album sales. Notably, in the nearly 20-year history of the MAMA awards, 2NE1 remains the only girl group to have won the "Album of the Year" category (2010).
This year, MAMA serves as a platform for the new generation of K-pop groups and the rising dominance of top stars pursuing solo careers. In key categories such as "Best Male Group," "Best Female Group," "Best Male Solo Artist," and "Best Female Solo Artist," as well as the three coveted Daesang awards — "Album of the Year," "Song of the Year," and "Artist of the Year" — a stellar lineup of "A-list" contenders is competing. This has ignited an intense voting race among fandoms, making the competition fiercer than ever.
The MAMA 2024 nominee list is packed with standout names like aespa, SEVENTEEN, (G)I-DLE, LE SSERAFIM, NewJeans, Jungkook, Jennie, and ILLIT, showcasing some of the brightest stars in K-pop. Among them, aespa and SEVENTEEN dominate with appearances in multiple nominations. Despite the adjusted judging criteria, SEVENTEEN is widely expected to clinch the Daesang for "Album of the Year" due to the staggering success of Seventeenth Heaven, which sold over 5.7 million copies. Close behind, aespa's Supernova has set itself apart as one of the year's most impressive songs. Meanwhile, Jungkook has emerged as a formidable contender with his internationally acclaimed debut album, GOLDEN.
This year's rookie category promises an intense "battle" between three standout girl groups: ILLIT, BABYMONSTER, and MEOVV. Among them, ILLIT leads the pack with impressive debut milestones, from achieving Perfect All-Kill to record-breaking album sales. However, regarding public favor and fandom support, BABYMONSTER emerges as a strong competitor that shouldn't be underestimated.
Adding to the excitement, the list of performing artists at MAMA 2024 has become a hot topic across online forums. According to the Organizing Committee, the first stage in Los Angeles (USA) will feature performances by Park Jin Young, TWS, ILLIT, KATSEYE, YOUNG POSSE, Anderson .Paak, and RIIZE. Meanwhile, the Japan stages will see ENHYPEN, IVE, TXT, ME:I, TREASURE, and izna performing on November 22, followed by an incredible lineup on November 23, including aespa, INI, ZEROBASEONE, BIBI, Lee Young Ji, MEOVV, and SEVENTEEN.
"This year's MAMA will feature a highly anticipated collaboration between PLAVE and Lee Young Ji," the organizers revealed. "Additionally, ENHYPEN, TXT, and ZEROBASEONE members will form a band for a unique performance. These acts promise to deliver unforgettable moments." The excitement doesn't stop there. TXT's Yeonjun is set to captivate audiences with a groundbreaking performance alongside a robot while (G)I-DLE prepares to deliver what has been teased as their most epic stage yet.
Adding to the buzz is the return of the "K-pop king," G-Dragon, who will grace the MAMA stage after a 9-year absence. His highly anticipated performance will take place on the final day of the awards ceremony. Following the release of his chart-dominating MV, Power, at the end of October, the BIGBANG leader is expected to deliver an iconic stage, solidifying his legendary status in this comeback.
According to Ten Asia, G-Dragon is expected to release a new music project on November 23, with the debut of the BIGBANG leader's latest single set to happen live on the MAMA 2024 stage. Korean media has also revealed that Taeyang and Daesung, the two remaining members of BIGBANG, will feature in G-Dragon's song, marking a full reunion of BIGBANG on stage for the first time in many years.
Meanwhile, on November 12, Ten Asia also reported that Bruno Mars is slated for an exceptional performance at the 2024 MAMA Awards, scheduled at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan. The organizers further commented, "Bruno Mars is considering participating in the 2024 MAMA Awards".
The K-pop community is excitedly buzzing following the massive success of Bruno Mars and Rosé (BLACKPINK)'s collaboration on the APT track. Released on October 18, the song made an instant impact, topping Korean music charts, debuting at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, and amassing 300 million views on YouTube in record time. APT now holds the title of the fastest music video to reach 300 million views in 2024.
