FPT University’s new advance in the internationalization process

The lecturers in this course come from FPT University with the curriculum combining in-class lectures and practice in laboratories.

Greenwich University is a famous university in the U.K., which was founded in 1890.

Currently, Greenwich Univeristy has three campuses in London and 45 branches implementing cooperation programmes in many countries in the world, including one with FPT University.

IT is one strong point of Greenwich University. Its School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences has also been ranked as a first-class one among universities in London.

After two semesters and once all exams have been successfully taken, students will receive a B.Sc. of Computing issued by Greenwich University. This degree is of equal value in comparison with degrees of students studying at Greenwich University.

The total tuition fee for this course is 3,500 USDs. FPT Univeristy will provide supplementary English courses with 140 lessons/level for students whose English levels are inadequate to participate in the programme. For the English courses, each level will last about 8-16 weeks and the tuition fee is 440 USDs. The first course will officially start in August 2009 at FPT University’s locations in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The preparatory English courses will start in June 2009.

With the advantages of the programme, FPT Univeristy hopes to have 3,000 – 5,000 students annually within the next 5 years.

Mentioning the advantages of the +2 Programme, Mr. Doan Quang Minh, Ph.D., director of the programme, said: “First, British educational system is the most prestigious in the world. Students following this course will be recognized as students studying in London. Second, the length of the course is brief and the content of the curriculum is condensed, mainly focusing on necessary skills for students. Third, FPT University’s policy is to answer the need of high-quality training of the society with reasonable tuition fees. The tuition fee of this programme is 1/3 of that for an equivalent programme in Singapore and 1/5 of that of the same programme in the U.K. Greenwich Univeristy has also shared this point of view and has agreed to accept low tuition fees but still ensuring all students’ benefits with the wish to attract a great number of students.

FPT started to join the education and training field in 1999 with the foundation of FPT Aptech and has helped provide a great number of human resources for Vietnamese IT industry. Thousands of officers of FPT and other Vietnamese IT companies come from this training centre.

To improve its position, FPT Univeristy has decided to make high-value degrees for FPT-Aptech students, and even to increase the international feature of its degrees by cooperating with biggest university education centres in the world, as well as to diversify its training methods.

At first, Greenwich Univeristy showed some concerns to a newly-established university like FPT University. However, in direct contact, Greenwich University’s representatives had totally been convinced through the working style and the belief of FPT University’s leaders, as well as the cooperation between FPT Software and FPT University, which was of great importance.

In his report, Greenwich University’s director of the cooperation programme said: “We are really impressed by FPT University in terms of professionality, material facilities for students and the direct contact with a software company.”

Having been able to realize the most difficult phase in university education – the last-year education, as well as to implement the curriculum in accordance with strict regulations which have been verified by QAA (Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education) in the U.K., FPT University will advance one more great step in the internationalization journey. This programme will be taught totally in English. If its quality is as expected, in the near future, FPT University will be among choices for students in the region who want to study IT well.

The cooperation with Greenwich University has opened up opportunities for further development with the M.Sc. programme in accordance with the transitional programme at FPT University. FPT University’s lecturers will also be able to participate in researches with Greenwich University on the basis of agreements between these 2 universities. This is really a great chance for FPT Univeristy to become not only a big training centre but also a big research centre.

In 2008, Greenwich University earned 17,6 million GBPs (about 25 million USDs) from scientific research. Specialists at Greenwich University work with calculation centres of NASA and many leading companies. The university’s software EXODUS won a prize of the British Computer Society and a honourable prize from the Queen.

Currently, this programme’s locations are in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
