Shortening the gap between university training and the real demand of enterprises

The seminar aims at providing and sharing information on On-the-job-training model by FPT University as an example of effort to shorten the gap between university training and the real demands of the society.

Targeting at meeting the real demands of enterprises, beside primary methods such as international standard-based training, learning in English, developing personal skills, inviting technology experts, FPT University has introduced a special content into its curriculum, which is the 1-year intership in IT companies obliged to students.

With this program, the third-year students shall have chances to work in enterprise environment, involving in real projects and would be paid according to their contribution. After that, students shall return to school to complete the final year with subjects relating to management and in-depth knowledge.

Therefore, after their graduation, the students possess one year experience and would be able to work for large IT companies in the country and abroad as well.

In addition to the working experience, after the internship, students are able to understand what they have to prepare for to meet the strict demand of recruiters and the labour market.

Dr. Le Truong Tung, Rector of FPT University said: “This internship is considered as an enterprise-based training for students. They will have opportunities to take part in project as an employee with a period of time long enough to grasp and understand the working procedure as well as to develop their personal skills.

The program is being implemented by FPT University since January 2009 and received positive feedback from students and companies. Assessing students in the first internship of FPT University, representatives from FPT Software expressed their satisfaction on the professionalism, self-confidence and quick adaptation of students to work and their friendliness and disciplinarity. The companies themselves realized that this would be a good chance to seek human resources of high quality to supplement their workforce.

Not only working in Vietnam, a number of students have proven their abilities and been assigned to work for abroad project as a real employee. Ngo Ngoc Tuan of class SE 0102 is a typical intern who passed three interviews by Neopost to take part in a two-month-project in the U.S.

Many students are also chosen and trained to work in Japan and Singapore. Additionally, excellent students were offered official labour contracts by Fsoft.

Not only cooperates with other members of the Corporation, FPT University also accompanies with domestic and foreign enterprises such as Hitachi Software Engineering, Quang Trung Software Company to train and provide human resources of high quality for the industry.

Upon visiting the University on 12^th August, Mr. To Huy Rua- Member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Head of Central Committee of Propaganda and Education, was impressed by the modern and effective training model of FPT University.

He highly appreciated the training model which combines learning and internship and ensures career opportunities to all students. In his opinion, FPT University is a good example that partly solves the existing weaknesses of the national training system such as: poor encouragement of creativeness and failure to meet the real demand of the society.

On-the-job training model by FPT University is expected to widespread and become one of effective solutions to the problem of shortening the gap between university training and the real demands of enterprises.
