FPT University has recently partnered with FPT Semiconductor JSC. to set up the Department of Semiconductor and Microelectronics, aiming to develop a top-quality workforce and conduct research on microelectronics and semiconductors. In addition, the establishment also seeks to enhance national competitiveness in those fields.
The Department of Semiconductor and Microelectronics at FPT University will welcome its first batch of students in 2024.
In Resolution 124 NQ/CP, concluding the Government's regular meeting in July 2023, the Government assigned ministries and agencies to rapidly develop and implement a scheme to create a skilled labor force for the semiconductor industry. By 2030, it is expected to train about 30-50 thousand engineers and experts for the industry.
The establishment of FPT University's Department of Semiconductor and Microelectronics is in response to the urgent need for a larger pool of professionals. It is a particularly crucial task in the strategic human resource planning for Vietnam's semiconductor industry, as well as in preparing a highly skilled semiconductor workforce for the global market.
The Department of Semiconductor and Microelectronics at FPT University is expected to welcome its first batch of students in 2024, focusing on in-depth training in IC design and conducting research for Vietnam's semiconductor and microelectronics industry. The curriculum and educational standards are anticipated to be developed in collaboration with top universities in this field in the United States and Taiwan (China), two of the four leading nations in the global chip and semiconductor industry (including the United States, Taiwan (China), Japan, and South Korea). The university will also partner with certification-training institutions and enterprises to offer various types of qualifications and certificates, ranging from short-term certificates (6 months to 2 years) to advanced training programs, associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, and postgraduate degrees in microelectronics and semiconductors.
FPT University's Department of Semiconductor and Microelectronics graduates can promisingly work for leading corporations and markets globally.
The semiconductor industry, a multi-billion-dollar sector, still faces a significant shortage of skilled labor worldwide. "According to global workforce experts' predictions, by 2030, the semiconductor industry will suffer a lack of one million professionals. Presently, the workforce trained by the four semiconductor powerhouses - United States, Taiwan (China), Japan, and South Korea - is inadequate to meet the huge demand. Hence, the Southeast Asian market, especially Vietnam, has a golden prospect to address this issue and rise in educational rankings as well as the supply of the high-quality labor force for the industry", Mr. Nguyen Vinh Quang, Director of FPT Semiconductor and also the Head of the Department, highlighted.
Vietnam has also become one of the top two countries chosen by global semiconductor manufacturers for investment to develop the next IC generation, according to Bain & Company, a global management consulting firm.
"The semiconductor industry is booming, and the scarcity of the human factor is a key chance for young Vietnamese talent to step onto the global stage with their global competitiveness. Therefore, Vietnam can gradually learn, master, and make its chips. FPT University will create a favorable mechanism to send graduates of this Department abroad, allowing them to learn, accumulate experience, and soon contribute to the comprehensive development of the industry," said a representative of FPT University. FPT University plans to collaborate with FPT Semiconductor and the broader FPT Corporation in over 30 countries to facilitate global career opportunities for Department of Semiconductor and Microelectronics graduates and let them work for the leading semiconductor enterprises and markets worldwide.
